Obituary

FRANK SCARTH, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, April 6, 2014 at Winfield Rest Haven.

He was born February 22, 1933 in Canton, Oklahoma and was the son of Joseph V. and Pricilla Avis (Floyd) Scarth. When he was 12 years old, the family moved to Winfield. Frank was raised and received most of his education in the Winfield area. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1952 and then attended Arkansas City Junior College and graduated in 1954.

Frank was united in marriage to Louise Reed on June 20, 1953 at the Assembly of God Church in Winfield. He worked for Beech Aircraft for several years. He wanted to go back to school to finish his education, so in 1958, a good friend of his offered him a full scholarship to play tennis at OSU for two years. That good friend was Myron Rodrick, the tennis and wrestling coach at OSU.

Some of Frank's accomplishments over the years playing tennis were as follows: two state championships in doubles at WHS, two championships in doubles at ACJC and two Big 8 championships in doubles at OSU. He also won several Missouri Valley Championships in doubles. Frank was a good golfer. He shot a hole in one at Quail Ridge. He pitched in slow pitch soft ball games in his 60's and still played tennis in his 70's. He was an avid bowler and carried an average of 192 for many years. He bowled a 299 and received a beautiful sapphire ring. Frank loved sports and was above average in any sport he played. Frank's favorite teams that he loved to watch were the St. Louis Cardinals, KU basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He taught printing for five years in Clay Center. In 1966, WHS had an opening for a printing teacher, so the family moved back to Winfield. He taught in Winfield for 33 years. He loved his family and was very proud of their accomplishments.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Ray and Larry, two sisters, Treva Reinke and Joan Sigman and his daughter, Cynthia Pepin.

Survivors include:

His wife: Louise of the home;

His son: Michael Scarth and wife, Brenda of Winfield;

His daughter: Gina Owen and husband, James of Burden;

Four granddaughters: Melanie, Melissa, Blair and Katie;

His grandson: Wyatt; and

7 great grandchildren: Brad II, Kole, Crystal, Calee, Logan, Ava and Blake.
