Floyd Montgomery, 85, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Friday evening, November 8, 2019 at his home.
Born January 2, 1934 in Cedar Vale, he was the son of Charles Nesbit Montgomery and Georgia Bertle (Dale) Montgomery. Floyd enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on November 26, 1951 and received his honorable discharge four years later. He then was drafted in the United States Army on November 8, 1956. He attended Radio Relay and Carrier Operator training in Georgia in 1957 and Radio and Carrier Repair Training in Germany also in 1957. He proudly served his country and received his second honorable discharge on November 7, 1958. Following the military, Floyd attended Wichita Drafting College in 1964 for Electronics.
Floyd worked at Cessna Aircraft, working in sheet metal and final assembly from January 1953 until August 1956. In July 1958, he returned to Cessna as an Electrical and Radio Installer and on the Flight Line, until February 1965. He went to work for Lear Jet in February 1965. He worked as an Electrical and Radio Installer, in the Avionics Final Sell Out, Avionics Flight Line and the Auto Pilot Flight Calibration. While at Lear Jet, he received training in Collin FD-108, Ground School for Lear Jet Systems, and had a total of 600 hours in Commercial Sel Instrument. Floyd left Lear Jet in 1968. He had 250 hours as co-pilot for Lear Jet and received Captain Rating in 1972.
Floyd was united in marriage to Evelyn "Stacy" Benisch on December 16, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan. The couple made Cedar Vale their home. Floyd was a commercial pilot, as well as an oil producer, farmer, and rancher. He was on the board of trustees of Caney Valley Electric Cooperative Association and the Kansas Electric Cooperative Loss Control Safety and Compliance committee from 1996 to 2005. He loved animals, especially his dogs and cats.
His family includes his wife Stacy of Cedar Vale; his sons, Wayne Montgomery of De Queen, AR; Kerry Thomas of Wichita; his brother S.J. Montgomery of Cedar Vale; his grandchildren, Tara and Trever Montgomery and Zane and Seth Thomas; and his great grandchildren, Brynn, Braxon, Beau, Dylan, and Colin.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his brother Dale Montgomery and sister Naomi Kelsey.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Cedar Vale. Interment will follow at Floyd and Stacy's ranch. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Floyd's name for the People's Place in Cedar Vale. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
