Obituary

FLORENCE "ALDEENE" THOMSON, 86, of Winfield, Kansas passed away Wednesday evening, November 21, 2012 at Winfield Resthaven.

Born on July 26, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Levi Clarence & Marie Della (Sims) Mowder. She attended Overbrook and Lakeview schools in Lawrence, Kansas as well as schools in Hays, Norton and Ellis Kansas. She was living in Hays when the dust storm hit and didn't seen the sun for 21 days. Aldeene later moved to Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944.

She was united in marriage to Gilbert Lee Thomson on May 27, 1945 in Winfield. During the 1960's she owned and operated a ceramics business. Aldeene later became a nurses' aide and was employed at William Newton Memorial Hospital and Winfield Resthaven.

She attended the First Baptist Church and the Free Methodist Church both in Winfield. Aldeene later became a member of Millington Street Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught a girls Sunday school class for many years. During her lifetime she had spent 38 years teaching Sunday school. She had attended Mulvane Christian Church most recently. Aldeene was a Girl Scout leader during the 1950's and hosted a Good News Club during the 1960's. Gilbert preceded her in death in 1976.

She enjoyed decorating for church activities, crocheting, crafting and working jigsaw and word search puzzles. Aldeene also enjoyed bird watching and in her earlier years of marriage and family, she enjoyed camping and gardening.

Her family includes:
Her daughters: Margaret Carroll of Newkirk, OK; Judy Summitt and husband Bill of Muldrow, OK; Linda Wolff of Winfield, KS; and Barbara Schultz and husband Brad of Oxford, KS;
Her 17 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren;
Her brothers: Clarence Mowder of Sacramento, CA; and Clyde Mowder of Edgewood, WA; and
Her sisters: Mary Gross of Alton, ILL; and Dona Smith of Sweet Home, OR.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Lee Thomson, Jr., her daughter, Mary Ellen Bruner, and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday, November 26, 2012. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M.

A memorial has been established in Aldeene's name for Millington Street Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
