Florence "Polly" Mathews, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, December 22, 2017 at William Newton Hospital.

Born May 11, 1922 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Felix and Gertrude (Ostrowski) Pozorski. She was raised and received her early education in Minnesota and the family later moved to Indiana where Polly graduated High School. She then attended and graduated from nursing school in Indiana, before becoming an Airline Stewardess for Pan Am. While working for Pan Am she was stationed out of Miami, Florida.

Polly was united in marriage to Marion "Paul" Mathews in 1947 in Indiana. The couple made their home in Lawrence while Paul finished Law School at the University of Kansas. In 1948 the couple moved to Winfield and Polly began working as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital. She later worked as a Public Health Nurse at several of the rural schools in the area, as well as making home visits to care for some of the elderly in the community. After retiring from nursing, she began working with children as a volunteer at Holy Name Catholic School. After over 63 years of marriage Mr. Mathews preceded her in death in 2011.

Polly was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield, where in addition to volunteering at the school she also volunteered in the annual Smorgasbord and baking pies for the annual bake sale. She enjoyed watching many sports including KU, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals and Notre Dame. She also enjoyed traveling with her family to Table Rock Lake, Grand Lake in Oklahoma, Indiana, and especially the Bahamas.

Her daughter: Cheryl Gentry and husband, Darrell of Independence;
Her grandsons: Todd Gentry and wife, Susan of Winfield; Brian Gentry and wife Suzanne of Winfield;
Her great grandchildren: Anna, Paul and London Gentry, all of Winfield;
Her sisters: Evelyn and Maryann;
Her brother: Joe Pozorski;
Her nephews: Mike Mathews of Wichita; Geoff Mathews of Idaho; and
Numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, Polly was preceded in death by 6 siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, December 29, 2017 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited on Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Polly's name for Holy Name Catholic School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
