Obituary

Flora Mae Walker, 96, was born October 28, 1929, to Frederick Douglas and Maggie Jane Lewis. She was the fourth of ten children. Known as Mae to family and friends, she grew up helping to mother her younger siblings. Always her mother’s helper, she attained adulthood being a responsible, obedient, loving, and gracious adult.

Mae married Eugene Doc Walker in 1945 and produced their first of 13 children in 1946. Two of the 13 died as newborns. In later years, she became step-mother to three other sons.

Mae was well known in Winfield and surrounding communities for her Godly Christian principles and lifestyle. She reared her children to follow her example: to love, respect, honor, and fear the Lord her God.

A faithful prayer warrior, Mae lived out her belief before family, friends, and the community. In the last stages of her life, she was a joy to be around. Hospitalized at one point, she was the darling of hospital staff. Grateful for every service, no matter how small or insignificant, she would thank them multiple times and tell them that they were precious. Staff nurses would come by her room just to hear her tell them that she loved them and how grateful she was for the care that she was receiving. All who knew her were impressed by her loving attitude and kind-hearted words of praise.

Because scripture tells us that “Precious in the sight of God is the death of His saints,” the angels are probably rejoicing, even now, to have Flora home with them. Matter of fact, she is probably, even now, trying to give the angels instructions as to how to drive the Heavenly chariots! No matter that she never drove a lick in her life, she always instructed whoever was driving her somewhere, how to drive and how to get where she wanted to go. We all got used to that and would have been surprised if for once she would forgo being the navigator.

Mae is survived by her loving children, Mary Brooks Burch (Daryl); Mae Jackson (James); Douglas Walker (Elsie); Harry Walker; Gary Walker; James Walker (Jane); Kay Cain (Gene); Henry Walker; Karen Berry (Porter); Lisa Hall (Dino); Kevin Walker; Chris Walker; three sisters; 23 grandchildren; and 58 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by sons, Roy Walker and Joe Walker.

Mae was a saintly matriarch of the Walker family and words cannot express how much she will be missed.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Faith Ignited Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Mae’s name for Bethel AME Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
