GULA "FARENE" WITHROW, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday evening, June 3, 2013 at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Born February 9, 1918 in Pond Creek, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Murlin Larue and Zelpha (Smith) McIntosh. Farene was raised and educated in Pond Creek, graduating from Pond Creek High School. She later attended and graduated Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma with a Bachelor Degree in Music Education.
She was united in marriage to Arlee Withrow on July 27, 1941 in Pond Creek. The couple moved to the Burden and Cambridge area in 1947 where they farmed. Farene worked teaching school in the Music and English departments and as a school librarian mostly in the Burden, Cambridge and Atlanta areas. Mr. Withrow preceded her in death in October 2010.
She was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling in the camper and attending a women's club in Atlanta.

Her twin daughters: Lynne Anne Crabtree and husband, Charlie of Lawrence, KS; and Joy Lee Brake and husband, Clyde of Winfield, KS;
Her sister-in-law: Ruth McIntosh of Eureka, KS;
Her 5 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren;
Her niece: Ramona Ploof and husband, Marcus of Noblesville, IN;
Her nephews: Tom McIntosh and wife, Zandra of Wichita; and Ray McIntosh and wife, Diane of Pratt, KS;
Her great nieces: Janet Berg of Arkansas City and Rebecca Cale and husband, Charles of Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada; and
Her great nephew: Craig Ballinger of Arkansas City; and
Many great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Farene was preceded in death by her brother, Murlin Max McIntosh and her sister, Audrey Opal Umbarger, and her niece, Wanda Ballinger and her husband, William Ballinger.
A Memorial service will be held at Miles Funeral Service on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 2:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Farene's name for RiverCross Hospice and for the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
