EVELYN ALICE WATT, 92, co-owner of Watt Equipment, an International Harvester Dealership, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on August 29, 2009.
She was born on July 18, 1917 to S. Gibson and Alice M. (Williams) Hammer in Maple City, Kansas. Evelyn graduated from Cambridge High School in 1934, and attended Southwestern College.
On September 21, 1940, she and Fuller Parker Watt were married in Winfield, Kansas. She worked in the office of Kerrs Ladies Wear until 1941, when she and Fuller moved to San Mateo, California. It was there that she was employed by Bank of America in San Francisco and Palo Alto. In 1946, after World War II, the couple returned to the family farming operation on Grouse Creek near Cambridge until 1960, when they moved to Winfield, Kansas.
While continuing their farming business, in 1961, they established Watt Equipment, Inc. in Winfield where they remained active until their retirement in August, 1987.
Evelyn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield, a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, an active lifetime member of Soroptimist International, a member of the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild, charter member of Wannabees Quilt Guild, and an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by
Her daughters and their families: Linda Ann Booth and husband, Jim of New Strawn, KS, and their children, Brian James Booth of Tulsa, OK; and Stacey Lynn Booth and her children, Jazmine and Colani of Gardner, KS; and Eva Kathleen (Kathy) Johnson of Wichita, KS, and her children, Paige Anna Johnson and husband, David Root and daughter Poppy of Prairie Village, KS; and Erik Watt Johnson and wife, Heather and son, Cole of Overland Park, KS;
Her brother: Gael W. Hammer of Washington Depot, CT;
Her brother-in-law: Randall Watt and wife, Marilyn of Cambridge, KS; and
Several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Fuller; a brother Stanley Hammer, a granddaughter Natalie Ann Booth, and her son-in-law Stephen J. Johnson.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday evening from 5 to 9. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 9 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Evelyn's name with the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
