Obituary

Evangeline Ruth Carlson, 96, of Winfield, Kansas, died September 2, 2017.

Van was born March 25, 1921 near Funk, Nebraska to Swedish immigrants Gustaf A. and Augusta E. (Peterson) Johnson.  She was the youngest of six siblings and enjoyed growing up on a farm in rural Nebraska.  She attended District 26 Magill School.  Her means of transportation to school was a buggy pulled by her horse, Dolly.  She finished her education at Holdrege High School, graduating with the class of 1938.  During WWII, she left the farm and moved to Santa Barbara, California with her best friend, Luella (Freeburg) Epping to work at Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing.  After the war, she married Edd Carlson on August 27, 1946 and the couple settled in Winfield, Kansas.  They had two children, Renae and Bruce.  Mr. Carlson passed away September 23, 2000.

Van was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years.  Every December for over 60 years, Van organized an event to take Christmas goodies to homebound members of the community.  She was a welcoming and generous neighbor and enjoyed convincing anyone coming into her home to enjoy a sweet treat and conversation.  She was very active in her family's lives and will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Edd Carlson, two infant sisters, brothers, Gunnard and Laurence Johnson, sister, Myrtle Schneider, nephew, Larry Johnson, and niece, Karen Scott.
