Obituary

Emily "June" Van Meter, loving wife and mother of three, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023 at the age of 93 at Cumbernauld Village.

Emily was born to Deloss and Alta (Purdy) Hiatt in Dacoma, Oklahoma, on May 11, 1930.  She was the youngest of six siblings.  She grew up on a farm and graduated from Dacoma High School in 1948.  June's family made many trips to California to visit her older sisters' families.  She married Corwin L. "Van" Van Meter on May 11, 1947, the day she turned 17.  He preceded her in death on November 16, 2020, after 73 wonderful years of marriage.

June helped her husband any way she could.  She assisted him on the farm, worked the cafe they owned, and when they moved to California, she cleaned houses to make ends meet.  They returned to Oklahoma and then moved to Atlanta, Kansas.  She assisted her husband during harvests at the Co-op and managed the grade school cafeteria.  June was an amazing cook.

She turned the family farm into a haven for cats, goldfish, and birds.  June loved to garden and bake.  She also supported the community and her church.  She was known for her orneriness and her dry sense of humor.

June's family includes her son Mike (Jeanene) Van Meter; her daughter Peggy (Gary) Satterlee; her 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, June was preceded in death by two sisters, four brothers, and her oldest daughter, Barbara Carver.

Private family graveside services will be held at Mt. Vernon Cemetery near Atlanta, Kansas.  Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established in June's name for Prairie View United Methodist Church.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
