Obituary

Emily Ellen Sloan, 95, of Reflection Ridge in Wichita, passed away Wednesday morning, June 28, 2023, at LakePoint El Dorado.

Born September 24, 1927, in the Des Moines, Iowa area, she was the daughter of Charles Franklin and Julia (Eaton) Schnabel.  She was raised in the Kansas City, Kansas area, graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1944.  Following high school, she attended Kansas University, where she met Derral Sloan playing the Tuba in the KU band.  She graduated from KU with a Bachelor in Music Education in 1948.

Emily and Derral Franklin Sloan were united in marriage on August 8, 1948 in Kansas City.  They made their first home in St. Paul, Minnesota before moving back to the Kansas City area.  In 1975, the couple moved to Chicago and in 1995 to Florida.  Emily worked in various schools including McClouth, Shawnee Mission, and Downers Grove, Illinois.  Derral preceded her in death on January 16, 2011.  Following Derral's death, Emily moved back to Kansas to be near family.

She was a member of the First Christian, Disciples of Christ Church and was most recently attending Westwood Presbyterian Church in Wichita.  She was also a member of the Friends University Community Orchestra.  Emily loved music and played the Viola.  She also enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family.

Her family includes her children, Doug Sloan and wife, Gail of Augusta; Susan Williams and husband, Clinton of Leon; Kenneth Sloan and wife Shari of Florida; Sherri and Ray Kurz of Elburn, IL; her daughters-in-law, Judy Sloan of Raytown, MO; Lisa Sloan of Chicago; and her 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Emily was preceded in death by a daughter Nina Gail Bean, two sons, Lawrence Wayne and Donald Warren Sloan, and her brother, Charles, Edward, Louis, and David Schnabel and a sister Julia Jacobson.

Graveside services will be held in Great Bend Cemetery at a later date under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established in Emily's name for the Friends University Community Orchestra.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
