Elinor Ruth Emi Uyeno Grose, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, died a Christian on August 24, 2012. She was surrounded by family and friends at Cumbernauld Village.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday September 1, 2012 in the chapel at the First United Methodist Church of Winfield, Kansas. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. A memorial reception is planned from 12:30-1:30 in the MacGregor Room at Cumbernauld Village.
Born on April 23, 1928 in Honolulu, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Dwight H. and Edith (Yamamoto) Uyeno of Honolulu. She was raised in Hawaii and attended Hanahau'oli School ('39) and Punahou School ('46).
She married George Benedict Grose on October 19, 1951 in Boston. To this union four children were born, Heidi, Mary, John, and Nina. The couple first resided in Boston, and then moved to Long Beach, California. They returned to Massachusetts and then moved to Plattsburgh, New York and then returned to California. In 2008 they made Winfield, Kansas their home and attended the First Presbyterian Church.
She received an associate of arts degree from Briarcliffe Jr. College, New York in 1948. She earned a bachelor of science in education from Wheelock College, Boston in 1956 and a master of arts in education from Whittier College, California in 1975. Known for her creativity and care of her elementary students, she began teaching full-time in 1968 and retired in 1994 from the Christian Sorensen Elementary School, Whittier. "Teachers are ambassadors to the world," she declared when she retired at Hartford Theological Seminary. She was a member of American Association of University Women, and National Education Association. She was an active minister's wife and served on community nonprofit boards. She founded the Children's Library at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. She also served as the photo historian for the Academy for Judaic, Christian, and Islamic Studies during functions in Canada, at UCLA, at MIT, and in Turkey. In 1987 she was named Companion of the Order of Abraham by The Academy. She is listed in several Who's Who publications including Who's Who in the World in 2001. She delighted in children, flowers, music, dance, and painting.
Her family includes her husband, George; her daughter Heidi Hill and husband Clark of Cedar Vale, KS; her daughter, Mary Grose and husband Jeffrey Skoblow of Edwardsville, IL; her son, John Grose and wife Beth of Richmond, CA; her daughter, Nina Senn and husband William of Oakland, CA; her sister, Elva Yoshihara and husband Tak of Honolulu, HI; her grandchildren: Hanamori Skoblow, Sean Senn, and Katerina Senn; step-grandchildren Deborah Hill, Dianna Puahala and husband Jonathan, Clark Hill, Jr. and wife Maura, and Doreen Bouchard and husband Frank; her step-great-grandchildren: Joshua and Mele Bouchard, Jeremiah Hill, Jordan Puahala, Hunter and Clark Hill; and numerous nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
