Obituary

Edwin J. Baalmann, 97, of Winfield, Kansas, joined his wife in their eternal home to be with their Lord and Savior, Wednesday evening, January 13, 2021 at the Joy Home in Oxford.

Born January 3, 1924 in Oakley, Kansas, he was the son of Anton and Agnes (Kamphaus) Baalmann. He was raised and received his early education in Oakley. He later moved with his family to Winfield where he graduated from Winfield High School in 1942. Following school, Edwin joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country on the USS Lang during WWII. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Winfield where he worked on Sonner Burner Company. In 1947, he moved to Wichita and worked for Midwest Foundry until 1950 when he began his career with Boeing. While at Boeing, he worked primarily with the B-52 military project and the SRAM missile, which took him to Caribou, Maine.

While in Caribou, Edwin met Joyce O'Connor. The couple married on October 24, 1959. They made their first home in Caribou before moving to Udall, Kansas in 1961. Due to Edwin's job, they lived all over the country including New York, Michigan, Texas, and South Dakota. Edwin remained at Boeing for over 35 years, retiring in 1989. In 1997, Edwin and Joyce moved to Winfield to be near their children and grandchildren. Joyce preceded him in death on December 28, 2020.

He was a founding member of the New Life Interfaith Chapel in Udall. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, and attending family activities. He took great joy in supporting his grandchildren in all their endeavors.

His family includes his daughters, Carmen Marsh of Winfield; Lori Christian and husband, Robert of Derby; Toni Baalmann and Royce Williams of Winfield; his sister Margie Casebolt of Wichita; his sister-in-law Val Baalmann of Wichita; his grandchildren, Stephanie; Sarah and husband, Erik; Derek; Kent and wife, Kelly; Austin; Lucas; Hannah; Tyler; Chad and wife, Amber; and Garrett; his great grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Bentley, Caden, Braelynn, Kenzli, Ava, and Lonnie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Edwin was preceded in death by his son Davey Baalmann, two brothers, Leland and Tony Baalmann, and sisters, Louise Waite, Geraldine Kennedy, Georgeanna Gardiner, Annabelle Nelson, and Loradell Gassert.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 9:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

Memorials have been established in Edwin's name for Wounded Warriors and Quilts of Valor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
