Edward Paul Foster passed away on March 16, 2021.
Ed was born to Ethel Loraine Fraser and Edward Granville Foster in Wichita, Kansas on July 18, 1927. He joined the U.S. Navy in June of 1945 at the age of 17. Edward was a Seaman First Class and was honorably discharged in September of 1946. His ship was the USS West Virginia (sunk at Pearl Harbor and raised to fight again.) He later became interested in the Honor Flight for World War II Veterans and was fortunate enough to get to take the flight.
Ed graduated from East High in Wichita, Kansas and went on to receive a Bachelor of Art from Friends University in Wichita and a Master of Education from The University of Wichita. Edward and Jeannine met while on a tandem bike outing with the First United Methodist Church in Wichita. They were married on November 4, 1949 in Wichita, KS. They lived briefly in Sedgwick and Hesston, Kansas. Ed and Jeannine moved to Winfield in 1954, where he was both a teacher and principal of Lowell Elementary school for 12 years. Following that, he taught at Southwestern College for 24 years in the Education Department. Ed retired in 1990 as a Professor Emeritus.
Mr. Foster has been a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and has held many church offices over the years. He has also served the community in a variety of capacities with the Winfield Teacher's Association, Civil Air Patrol, William Newton Hospital Auxiliary, an ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce, and Kiwanis. Edward was recently recognized for 50 years of service with the Kiwanis Club. Edward also served as the co-director of the Walnut Valley Contest for many years after retirement.
After retirement, Edward and Jeannine enjoyed traveling, meeting with friends and volunteering in the church and community. They enjoyed trips to Europe, Russia, and Thailand as well as visiting most of the continental United States. They both also volunteered at the Winfield hospital. After Jeannine's passing, Edward moved to Cumbernauld Village in Winfield where he resided until the present.
Ed was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by Daughters: Cynthia Foster of San Antonio, TX and Carol Foster of Colorado Springs, CO, Grandchildren: Kent Bevan and Diana Bevan of Fairfield, CA, Laura Ruffennach of Colorado Springs, CO; and Great-Granddaughters: Jennifer and Emily Ruffennach.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeannine Foster.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2021, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.
The family has requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the First United Methodist Church of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
