Obituary

Edward Junior Brake, 83, of Arkansas City, was set free Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Born September 14, 1942, in Dyess, Arkansas, he was the fifth child born to Grady S. Brake and Pearl Eugina (Boyer) Brake. He grew up in many places in Missouri, and as a young man, worked for Drennen Motor as well as for Ed Galyon as a tile and carpet installer. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and served two years in Germany during the Cold War. He received an honorable discharge in 1964. He then started employment with Beech Aircraft.

Ed was united in marriage to DeLoris Ireland on July 24, 1964, and the couple raised three children. Ed also worked at the ADM Mill while attending Cowley County Community College, earning an Associate of Arts degree. He also graduated from Law Enforcement in Hutchinson. He was a Patrolman for the City of Oxford, was Chief of Police for Sumner County, and was Patrolman for the City of Ark City, before becoming employed with GE Aviation Engines, where he held many positions. He retired from the National Guard as Master Sergeant after 29 years of service and retired from GE with over 25 years, both in 2003.

He was Union Steward and Union President of Local 1004. Ed enjoyed coaching baseball and umpiring. He served at the Winfield American Legion Post 10, and held the position of Commander for a time. He held many more offices on the National level. Ed served wherever the need arose. He enjoyed attending and watching his children and grandchildren’s sports. He was unable to attend his great grandchildren’s activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Joshua, sisters, Nellie, Lily, and Dorothy, and brothers, Leroy and Clyde.

Survivors includes his wife DeLoris; sons, David (Carla), and Mike; daughter Lisa Pink; six grandchildren, Natasha (Brant) Tevebaugh, Zachary Brake, Tristda Brake, Malcolm Pink, Ashlynn (Tyler) Ward,Tylissa (Julian) Roan, Lesa Ryan; 15 great grandchildren; sisters, Edna (Don) Allison, Glenda (Stan) Hoag; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, June 22, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Ed’s name for the Lewy Body Dementia Foundation and for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Peden Unit at the Kansas Veterans Home. They went above and beyond to make Ed feel loved and had so much compassion with their care. Also a big thank you to Good Shepherd Hospice for their care and support of Ed and the family.
