Edith "Joan" (Peacock) Hovey, 80, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 18, 2017 at her home.
Born June 24, 1937 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Wayne and Beatrice (Dunlap) Peacock. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1955. Joan was a member of Rainbow Girls during high school and spent most of her time at the Glass Skating Rink. She also worked at J.M. McDonald's and Shennman's Meat Market on Main Street.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth Hovey on March 4, 1956 in Winfield. Thus began her tour of the world as a military wife. She traveled the world with her family while supporting her husband during his service in the United States Air Force. Joan would return to Winfield when her husband served isolated tours of duty in Greenland and when he served in Vietnam. She was a Brownie leader in Spain and a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader on most of the bases where the family was stationed. In the Philippines, she was the director of camping activities for several hundred girls. After twenty-five and a half years of seeing the world, Joan once again returned to Winfield with her husband, Senior Master Sargent Hovey, to retire.
Upon returning to Winfield, Joan enjoyed reconnecting with her childhood friends. She played Bunco and celebrated birthday lunches with all her former Girl Scout leader friends. She worked with the Girl Scouts as a leader and as a cookie manager. She also worked for a time as a Stanley dealer. Joan was a tole painter. She and Kenneth traveled to different craft shows throughout the United States. Her tole paintings are owned by happy customers throughout the country. She enjoyed watching and supporting her children and grandchildren in any and all of their sport and school activities. Joan was a member of the First Baptist Church and was involved in many clubs and organizations including Non-Commissioned Officer Wives' Club, The Housewife Bowling League in The Philippine Islands, bowling league in Winfield and the "Red Hats".

Her great grandson: Liam Thatcher Hovey of Indianapolis, IN.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Sue Hovey, Bob and Donna Hovey, Lorraine and Jim Beck, her sister, Barbara "Jean" McFarland and son-in-law, Gary Dyke.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 5 that afternoon.
A memorial has been established in Joan's name for the DaVita Dialysis Center in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
