Obituary

Edgerly Lewellyn Brewer, 101, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Friday morning, May 5, 2017 at Cumbernauld Village.

Born August 21, 1915 in Udall, Kansas, he was the son of Daniel Otis and Flora Anna (Miller) Brewer. Ed attended school at the rural Windsor school in Cambridge, the rural Red Bud school through 8th grade and Udall High School, graduating in 1934. He then attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. He furthered his education at University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, receiving his Master's Degree. Ed worked as a high school teacher in Cherokee, Kansas for three years. He then joined the United States Coast Guard in June 1942 and served in New York City, Boston, and Puerto Rico and aboard the USS El Paso in the Philippine Islands. Following his honorable discharge on September 16, 1946, he worked as a college instructor at Kansas State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, Kansas for three years. He made his career working for the IRS, first as an agent in Independence for eight years, Wichita for two years, and Aberdeen, South Dakota for three years. His final 13 years with the IRS were served as the Chief of Audit in Aberdeen, South Dakota until his retirement in 1975. He continued to teach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota and retired again in 1977.

While teaching in Cherokee Kansas, Ed met Marguerite Hargrove, a teacher at Centerville Rural school, and a life-long relationship was formed. They were united in marriage on August 1, 1941 in El Dorado Kansas. The couple had five children and lived in various towns and states. They moved to Galena, South Dakota in 1977 and returned home to Kansas in 1988 to reside in Winfield. In 2005 the couple moved to Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Marguerite preceded him in death on June 17, 2011.

Ed was a faithful and devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Winfield. He also belonged to the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion as well as the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and especially enjoyed serving his community.

His survivors are:
4 children: AnnaBess Maly and husband, Steve of Oklahoma City, OK; Sue Tullar and husband, Jim of Coon Rapids, MN; Robert Brewer and wife, Cindy of Parker, CO; and David Brewer and fiance' Sherry Roeser of Wichita, KS;
15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by a son, John Douglas "Doug" Brewer and a great granddaughter, Jaymee Jo Oliver, his sister Vivian Young and brother William Leonard Brewer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Winfield, Kansas. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at Akron Cemetery north of Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

Memorials have been established in Ed's name for the First United Methodist Church and for Cumbernauld Village Employee Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
