Dorris A. (Kent) Gaffron, 93, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, June 29, 2018 at her home surrounded by her daughter and caregivers.
Born October 3, 1924 in Winfield, she was the daughter of John Esley and Florence Ethel (Wade) Kent. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1943. She then attended Southwestern College before moving to Washington D.C. to work for the government and help in the war efforts. She married Enos O. Stone during the war. To this union a daughter was born. The couple later divorced.
In 1969 Dorris was united in marriage to Walter E. Ferguson. The couple made their first home in Wichita, Kansas and later moved to McAllen, Texas. Mr. Ferguson preceded her in death in 1990. Dorris was later married to John M.C. Gaffron and the made their home in McAllen. Mr. Gaffron preceded her in death in 2009. While in McAllen Dorris started her own business, selling sewing machines, fabric, and anything needed for sewing. In addition to owning her own business she worked as a secretary and clerk most of her career. She worked for the Sedgwick County Commissioner, Sedgwick County Treasurer, the Wichita Eagle, and for Boeing. Dorris also traveled all over the country in her life living in several areas, including Kansas, Washington D.C., California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Texas, and Hawaii. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, hunting, shopping, and traveling.
Her family includes her daughter Marietta Eskridge and husband, Marshall of Dallas, TX; her step daughter Anita Hughes of Claremont, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Dorris was preceded in death by four sisters, Nettie Brannum, Gladys Garrett, Bula Spongberg, and Thelma Bunyan, four brothers, Claude Kent, Chester Kent, Roscoe Kent, and James Kent, and her granddaughter, Jamie Snodgrass.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment followed at Floral Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in Dorris' name for the Alzheimer Association and for Macular Degeneration Research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
