Obituary

Dorothy Haden, 79, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, March 24, 2011 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born May 28, 1931 in Ames, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Leroy M. and Marie K. (Milbers) Sturgeon. She was raised and received her early education in Lacy, Oklahoma. She attended Enid High School in Enid, Oklahoma, where she graduated in 1949. After high school she attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University School of Business. She then worked in accounting for O'Mealy's cafeteria restaurant chain in Oklahoma City.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Joel M. Haden on August 10, 1952 in Ames, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The family moved around with Joel while he was in the Army. After his time in the Army the family moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas. In 1960 the family moved to the Haden Ranch near Cedar Vale. After her children began school Dorothy returned to school at Southwestern College where she received a degree in Teaching. She then went to work at Dexter High School as a business teacher where she remained until her retirement.

Dorothy was a member of the Walnut Valley Quilter's Guild, the Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Cedar Vale Historical Society, and the Non Peril Club. She enjoyed reading and quilting.

Her husband: Joel M. Haden of the home;
Her daughter: Melanie Abitz and husband, Bruce of Onaga;
Her sons: Joel H. Haden of Cedar Vale; Michael Haden of Hennessey, OK; John Haden and wife, Rhonda of Cedar Vale;
Her grandchildren: Joel M. Haden, II; Jarvis Haden; Kinlee Haden; Tucker Haden; Tyler Haden; Melissa Haden; T.J. Haden; Cody Haden; Wyatt Haden; Trevor Abitz; Katrina Abitz; and
Her great grandchildren: Joel Raife; Emalee Haden.

In addition to her parents Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister and four brothers.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Mrs. Haden's name for the Cedar Vale Museum and for the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
