Dorothy Groene, 98, passed away December 24, peacefully with family at her side.

A daughter of Winfield, Dorothy was born to Noah and Sylvia Davis, February, 1912. She graduated with the Winfield High School Class of 1929. She attended business classes at St. John's College and studied organ at Southwestern College before being the first woman employed at the First National Bank of Winfield during the depression.

She was married in 1946 to Albert Groene, a farmer stockman from rural Winfield living on the family farm for over 30 years. Later, she worked at the Cowley County Treasurer's Office and was a devoted volunteer at William Newton Memorial Hospital. She was the organist for over 40 years at the Holy Name Catholic Church. Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Albert in 1988.

Her nine grandchildren: Patrick Byrnes of Fort Worth, TX; Brad Wartell of Austin, TX; Crissti Wartell of New York, NY; Tyler Farabi of Shawnee Mission, KS; Joe Byrnes of BAF Afghanistan; Corey Farabi of Chicago, IL; Lizz Byrnes of Sarasota, FL; Tyson Groene of Wichita, KS; Martin Groene of Udall, KS.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited Monday evening December 27th at 7:00 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

Memorials have been established in Mrs. Groene's name for the Holy Name Catholic School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
