Obituary

Dorothy A. Fruits, 86, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, December 15, 2016 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Born June 23, 1930 in Riverton, Kansas, she was the daughter of Christopher Charles and Jessie Margaret (Rupert) Myers. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1948. After school, she began teaching in rural schools in Oxford and Udall. She later went to work as a secretary for Beech Aircraft, a sales clerk for Archer Jewelry and then began her career at Winfield Floral.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Jack F. Fruits on July 22, 1971 in Sedan, Kansas. The couple made their home in Winfield where they owned and operated Winfield Floral Company, Floral Shop and Greenhouse. They continued operating the Greenhouse until retiring in 1989. Jack preceded her in death on January 16, 2014.

Dorothy loved her family. She enjoyed holidays, traveling, her many pets and feeding birds and stray animals. She was a talented plant and garden enthusiast. She was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary, the Kansas Teacher's Association and the Growers Association.

Her daughters: Gretchen Kittelson and husband, Randy of Winfield; Hilda Sumner and husband, Marcus of Wichita;
Her step-daughter: Cheryl Lynn Higgins of Winfield:
Her step-son: Timothy Fruits of Ormond Beach, FL;
Her sister: Mary Myers of Mulvane;
Her sister-in-law: Virginia Myers of North Platte, NE;
Her daughter-in-law: Rosalie Fruits of Ponca City, OK; and
Her 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jack, Dorothy was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Cooper, a son, Danny Fruits, a step-son, Gary Joe Fruits, her brother, Charles Max Myers a sister, Nellie Irene Myers and two infant sisters.

Graveside memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Kansas. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Dorothy's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
