DONALD E. VAN FLEET, 83, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, July 5, 2008 at William Newton Hospital.
Born on December 16, 1924 in rural Atlanta, Kansas, he was the son of George and Clara (McNown) Van Fleet. He was raised and received his education in Atlanta and Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1942.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Van Fleet proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was united in marriage on November 29, 1947 to Roberta Worden in Winfield where the couple made their first home. In 1955 they moved to El Dorado, Kansas, and returned to Winfield in 1957.
Don was employed at Jack Lane Chevrolet and Bud Swenson Chevrolet. He owned and operated Don's Body Shop from 1972 until 1990 and then became a auto claims insurance adjustor for Leiker Claims Service. Mrs. Van Fleet preceded him in death on March 7, 2002.
Don was a member of the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping and working on cars.

His grandchildren: Ryan and Missy Van Fleet, Jason and Erika Van Fleet, Kassie and Mike Cook, Ashton Humbert and Chris Van Fleet;
His great-grandchildren: Jacob Van Fleet, Isabell Van Fleet, Laci and Logan Van Fleet, Kallie Cook and Kaleb Cook; and
His extended family: Sherry Spielman, Adrianne, Abigail and Austin Spielman, Cameron, Curtis and Bryce Cook, Kerry Hittle and Dustin Durbin.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Teresa Van Fleet.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 9, 2008. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., that evening.
Memorials have been established in Don's name for the American Diabetes Association and the Winfield Meals on Wheels program. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
