Obituary

Donald Jordan Roberts, 94, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, April 17, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center.

Born June 25, 1926 in Winfield, he was the son of Forrest M. and Ethel (Jordan) Roberts. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, attending Prairie Ridge School and Winfield High School, graduating in 1944. In September 1944, he entered the United States Army, serving at Ft. Hood, Texas and later transferred to Ft. Ord, California. Don also spent time in the Philippines and at the end of World War II, he was stationed in Japan.

Don married Millye Jones in November of 1950. The couple had three children and Millye preceded him in death. Don was united in marriage to Erma Handlin on August 7, 1976 at Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Don enjoyed flying and received his Pilot's license on August 17, 1947. In 1948, he began working as a Soil Conservation Technician and in 1982, received an award from the US Department of Agriculture for his 36 years of service. Following his retirement, he served on the County Soil Conservation District Board for many years. In 1983, he was a tour host for Rural Route Tours International, traveling with his wife Erma to the farmlands in Western Europe. In 1985, they took a tour group to southern Europe. Don farmed ground east of Winfield most of his life.

He attended Grace United Methodist Church and later, Tisdale United Methodist Church, where at age 10, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Don was the Winfield Methodist Lay Leader for eight years. In 1993 and again in 1999, Don and Erma toured the Holy Land, traveling the footsteps of Jesus. He was a member of the American Legion and the Gideons. In 2002, Don developed the program, Brothers In Blue Prison Ministry.

His family includes his wife Erma Roberts of Winfield; his children, Becky Roberts of Dallas, TX; Rex Roberts of Wyoming; Cindy Grimes of Arkansas City; Linda Fraass and husband, Ron of Las Vegas, NV; Carol Parker and husband, Lee of Reston, VA; Roy Handlin and wife, Lee of Lubbock, TX; and his seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Don was preceded in death by his three sisters, Ruth Scott, Montra Bergdall, Jean Green and a son-in-law Steve Grimes.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at Tisdale United Methodist Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Inurnment with Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials in Don's name for Tisdale United Methodist Church and Brothers in Blue Prison Ministry. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
