Donald C.
Lipprand
April 1, 1935 – July 18, 2018
Donald C. Lipprand, 83, of Winfield passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at William Newton Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
Donald was born April 1, 1935 on his parent's farm, Fred and Lydia (Mai) Lipprand, in Bunker Hill, Kansas, the third of six children. He was a hardworking farm boy and left high school after his sophomore year to help on the family farm. After a one-year hiatus, he took up rooming in town, with the understanding that his high school education would be completed by taking extra credits. In just one year he graduated from Russell High School in 1953. After several years as a grocery store worker Don was recruited by Mutual of Omaha. During an exceptionally long and productive sales career he helped many people to get into the insurance business. At the time of his death he still held an active license, having been contracted with Mutual of Omaha for 58 years.
Don met his wife Betty in July 1953 at a Watchtower Convention held in New York City, attended by 165,000 people from 96 different countries. The couple married December 7, 1955 and celebrated nearly 63 years of marriage. Betty was from Saskatchewan, born to Hungarian immigrant parents.
For nearly all his adult life, Don served as an elder in the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Those who knew him valued his kind way and tireless work as a caring shepherd within the congregations that he served. He was baptized in symbol of dedicating his life in service to Jehovah God on January 20, 1952. He was a member of the congregation in Russell, Kansas for 74 years.
Throughout his life he exemplified qualities that have endeared him to many. He demonstrated what it means to be a truly spiritual person putting his relationship with Jehovah first in his life, standing firm for scriptural principles and always forgiving and encouraging his family and friends. He believed in the ethic of work, that applying yourself to a job and doing it well brought satisfaction and self-sufficiency. Throughout his life he gave of himself, often those benefitting from his generosity not even realizing whom their benefactor was. He found joy in giving and in hospitality. Throughout all of life's challenges he was there to help his children, his family and his friends.
Don enjoyed the ministry and being able to help people. He loved having people over and was a very hospitable and generous man. He enjoyed traveling and business trips. His travel highlights were to Watchtower Conventions every year, including an international one in Hungary. He also liked playing cards, he played to win, and had a love for polka music. He even took the family on a polka cruise.
His family includes his wife, Elizabeth Lipprand, of Winfield; son, Richard Lipprand and wife Cindy of Omaha, NE; daughters, Lynda Yale and husband Glenn of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada and Marjorie Engle and husband Scott of Winfield; his brother Kenneth Lipprand of Topeka; sisters, Jane Spone, Deloris Ungles, Karen Poynter and Sylvia Mudd; his grandchildren, Nicole Sawyer and husband Brent, Joshua Murphy, Rebekah Shipley, Amanda Slechta and husband Jeff and Grant Lipprand and wife Florence; and his great-grandchildren, Colin and Ivy Sawyer, Payton, Jace, and Keaton Murphy, Steven Haifley, Arianna Shipley, Taylor and Cadence May, Jarrod and Malia Slechta.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will hold memorial services July 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Winfield. No graveside services will be held. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.milesfuneralservice.com
