Donald Lee Lawing, 90, of Sachse, Texas, formerly of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Mustang Creek Estates.
Born March 30, 1933, in Mount Holly, North Carolina, he was the son of Robert Bryant and Edna Lee (Shull) Lawing. He was raised and received his education in Mount Holly, attending Mount Holly High School. Don joined the United States Air Force in February of 1952, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge on January 9, 1956.
He was united in marriage to Gwen Shatford on August 7, 1954, in Los Angeles, California. The couple made their first home in Lancaster, California. Don's career with General Electric began in 1963. In 1968, he transferred to Strother Field and moved his family to Arkansas City, Kansas. In 1984, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma for a couple years, returning to Arkansas City and eventually Winfield. Don retired from GE in 1998, after 35 years of service. Gwen preceded him in death on April 22, 2018.
Don was an avid golfer, a hobby that started when he was a teenager. While in the Air Force in Japan, he competed in multiple tournaments. He continued his love of golf into his 80's. He loved life, spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed sharing his backyard deck and his famous BBQ meals while living in Arkansas City and Winfield.
His family includes his son Donald Lawing, II and wife, Kenalea of Garland, TX; his daughter Charlotte Otten and husband, Bill of Denton, TX; his five grandchildren, Stashia, Kylee, Tyler, Ryan, and Amy; and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by a brother Jack Lawing and a sister Barbara McConnell.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Winfield under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. There will be a viewing and visitation with the family prior to services, beginning at 9:00 A.M.
A memorial has been established in Don's name for Helping Hands. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
