DONALD L. ATWOOD, 71, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, November 20, 2011 at William Newton Hospital.

Born April 3, 1940 in Lyons, Kansas he was the son of Warren Leroy and Christa Marie (McGee) Atwood. He was raised and received his education in Winfield. The family moved to Wichita while Don was in High School, he graduated in 1958. Shortly after graduation Don enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. After the war he was honorably discharged in Great Falls, Montana.

Don married Joan Nettick while in Montana, where the couple made their home. To this union two children were born. The couple later divorced. Don returned to Wichita where he began working for Learjet. He worked for Learjet for many years until retiring in the late 1990's. After retiring Don drove a shuttle for the Cowley County Council of Aging Transportation Service.

Don enjoyed target practice, traveling with his mother, and spending time with his faithful dog Sooner.

His family includes:

His children: Warren Leroy and Jerri Ann;
His faithful dog: Sooner; and
Many cousins.

Don was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Caldwell Cemetery in Caldwell Kansas. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. The family will greet visitors at this time.

A memorial has been established in Don's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
