Don graduated from Winfield High School in 1959. After high school, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country for four years until receiving an honorable discharge in 1963.

Following his service in the Navy, Don returned to Winfield. While on a blind date, he met the love of his life, Mary Lee Foos. They made their first home in Winfield while Don attended Southwestern College and received his teaching degree. He began his career as a teacher at Lowell Elementary School until moving to Knoxville, Iowa in 1970. Don served as a coach and teacher in Iowa, and as a coach and Principal when the family moved to Pomona, Kansas in 1973. In 1977, he moved his family to Udall, where he was Principal for over ten years. While in Udall, he continued to coach basketball, track, and baseball. Don returned to the classroom in 1990, working as a fifth grade teacher for Roosevelt Elementary School in Arkansas City. He remained with USD 470 as a teacher and coach until retiring in 1998. Don and Mary returned to Winfield in 2004. In addition to teaching and coaching, Don enjoyed officiating basketball alongside his wife as well as coaching with her for many years.
