Derrick Higgins' Obituary
Derrick Higgins, 32, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Born September 1, 1982, in Florence, South Carolina, he was the son of Ivory Higgins and Elizabeth Ann Jett. He was raised and received his education in Darlington County, South Carolina, graduating from Lamar High School in 2001. While in school he was an accomplished athlete in both track and football. His senior year he set the South Carolina State record for most receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in the State Championship Game. After high school he received a football scholarship. He attended Georgia Military College, Dodge City Community College, and Newberry College.
In 2005 Derrick moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked for UPS, Johnson Controls, and Cherry Creek Nursing Home. While in Wichita he met his future wife Amanda Cates. In November 2014 Derrick and Amanda moved to Winfield where Derrick worked for Cates Supply.
He enjoyed playing football and basketball, shooting pool, and listening to and creating music. He especially loved spending time with his family.

His sisters: Whitney Jett of Florence, SC; Erica Jett of Florence, SC; and
His numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
In addition to his parents, Derrick was preceded in death by a sister, Carmenn Higgins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., on Saturday, January 10, 2014 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. A private family inurnment will take place in South Carolina at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening, January 9, 2014 from 5 to 9 P.M. The family will greet visitors that evening.
A memorial has been established in Derrick's name for his children's education. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
