Derrel Glenn Pearce, 92, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at his home. Memorial services are at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, at First Baptist Church, Winfield, Kansas. Inurnment will be at Argonia Cemetery, Argonia, Kansas at 2 p.m. A visitation with the family will take place at Miles Funeral Service on Monday evening from 4 to 6 P.M.
Derrel was born December 18, 1925 on a farm south of Argonia, Kansas, to E.G. and Madge (Conn) Pearce. He was educated in a rural elementary school and attended Argonia High School. He farmed with his father, E.G. Pearce for 10 years. On August 4, 1946, Derrel married Vivian Funk, his high school sweetheart, at the First Baptist Church, Argonia, Kansas. To this loving union were born two sons and four daughters.
Derrel and Vivian moved to Winfield, Kansas, in 1953. He began working for Snodgrass and Funk Construction. He became a partner with Erwin Funk in the construction company upon the retirement of Verne Snodgrass in 1966. After Erwin's retirement, Derrel carried on the fine reputation of Snodgrass and Funk Construction until his retirement in 2000. It is impossible to calculate the number of homes and businesses with his brand of quality workmanship. He has left has mark on Winfield and the surrounding area by his building skills and his love of people.
At the establishment of Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity, Derrel was a vital part of constructing twenty-five houses. He worked on every house from 1992 to 2018.
Derrel was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, older brother Merle and younger brother David, three sisters Alice Phillippi, Doris Kuykendall and Joy Kosydar.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Vivian, of 72 years; sons John and wife Aletha Pearce, Mesa, Arizona, Mark and Cindy Pearce, Austin, Texas; daughters Teresa and Gary Moore, Arkansas City, Carol and Max Cummings, Cedar Vale, Kathy and Roger Fox, Winfield, Marsha and Arlon Wesseler, Winfield; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson. He is also survived by brothers, Denzel and Barbara Pearce, Wichita and Dean and Kathy Pearce, Centralia, Illinois and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials haven been established with Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity and First Baptist Church, Winfield.
