Born September 11, 1944, in Houston, Texas, he was the son of Ronald and Lourene (Schell) Graham.  He was raised and received his education in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas graduating from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in 1962.  While in high school, David fell in love with New Mexico while attending a church camp in Glorietta.

He married Gloria Hawkins in December of 1962.  The couple made their first home in Tokyo, Japan, while David was serving his country in the United States Army.  In 1966, after receiving an honorable discharge, the couple moved to Arkansas for a short time before returning to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.  To this union, two daughters were born.  The couple later divorced. After his time in active duty, David also served as an Instructor in the United States Army Reserve.

David worked several jobs including being a supervisor at a citrus packing shed and working in banking.  While living in Texas Hill Country, he began his career as a General Contractor.  He enjoyed remodeling homes as well as building new homes.  In 2014, David moved to Lindrith, New Mexico where he remained until 2018 when he relocated to Winfield, Kansas to be near family due to health concerns.

During high school, David was a member of FFA.  He was also a member of Baptist churches in the communities he resided.  He loved woodworking, making several wooden cradles for family members, leather working, gardening, and raising cattle and chickens.
