Darlene L. Long, age 90, of Winfield, Kansas passed away September 11, 2023.
Born July 31, 1933, in Hooper, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Fred and Hilda Hagerbaumer. Darlene was raised and educated in Hooper, graduating from Hooper High School in 1951. Continuing her education in Winfield, Kansas at St. John's College, she received a teacher training degree in 1953. Later, she pursued a degree at Southwestern College where she received a degree in Elementary Education in 1970.
While attending college in Winfield, Kansas, Darlene met and married Clyde Long in 1956. They made their home in Winfield where she worked several years as a teacher for Winfield USD 465 prior to the birth of their children. She returned to teaching in 1971 and taught in elementary schools another 24 years for USD 465.
After retiring, Darlene was a dedicated volunteer, devoted grandmother, and later, a caregiver to her spouse, Clyde. She was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church, William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and the Winfield Country Club.
Survivors include their daughter, Sherri Flippo and spouse, Bob; granddaughter Lexandra Flippo; their son, Mark Long; and her brothers, Fred Hagerbaumer and Al Hagerbaumer.
Graveside service for immediate family will be held at Highland Cemetery on Thursday, September 21, 2023, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established in Darlene's name for Trinity Lutheran Church and for the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
