Darlene "Lene" Hilda King, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 30, 2015 at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Darlene was born in Cedar County, Iowa on April 20, 1924 to Alfred Voss and Rose Wendt. She grew up in several small towns in Cedar County and graduated from Tipton High school in 1942. In that same year she married Daniel W. Yerington. From that union came three children, Daniel L., Marion, and Mark. For the next 25 years, Lene and the family lived in many homes in Cedar County, Iowa. She always loved music, dancing, singing, yodeling, horror movies, cooking, baking, traveling, and fishing.
She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran church. For several years in the 1960's she worked as a nurses aid in the veterans hospital in Iowa City, IA. In 1967 she and Daniel divorced, and two years later she met and married Cecil King. From this marriage she gained three stepchildren, Mike, Linda, and Monty. In the '70s she continued her nursing in several hospitals in Kansas. She and Cecil lived in several communities in Kansas until Cecil's death in Winfield in June of 2005. They both loved to fish, travel, and dance. They belonged to the Wichita Polka Club for many years spending one year as King & Queen of the club, and traveled the country in that steed. Lene spent the last several years of her life at the Winfield Veterans Home.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lester, two sisters, Leora and Beone, her husband, Cecil, daughter, Marion, and stepson, Monty.
She is survived by two brothers, Al and Lorren, three sons, Daniel, Mark, and stepson, Mike, stepdaughter, Linda, 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Kansas Veterans Home for the kind and thoughtful care of Lene.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at New Salem Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Lene's name for Trinity Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
