Daniel E. Smith, 89, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, June 17, 2013 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born April 16, 1924 on the family farm in Garfield County, Oklahoma, he was the son of Elmer Marion and Ida Bell (Lindquist) Smith. He was raised and received his education in Pond Creek, Oklahoma, graduating from Pond Creek High School in 1940. While in school he received the FFA's American Farmer Award. On August 1, 1940 the family moved to, and established the family farm northwest of Winfield, Kansas.

Daniel was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Hamlin on April 6, 1952. The couple made their home on the family farm northwest of Winfield for over 61 years, where they raised their family as well as various crops and livestock.

He was a member of Webb Road Community of Christ Church and the Pecan Growers Association. He was active on many community boards including Kellogg COOP, Middle Walnut Watershed, Ninnescah Township, as well as being a Walnut Valley 4-H Leader.

His great-grandchildren: Nathan and Jacob Williams; Carl Smith; Reagan Baca; Aliah, Anthony, Mia and Ella Taggart; Justin, Alexis, Jace and Jasper Smith; Nikolas and Mattalynn Smith; and Payton and Tyler Ray; and
Four nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery northwest of Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Thursday evening, June 20, 2013 from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8.

A memorial has been established in Daniel's name for the Kellogg Hall Improvement Fund, the Webb Road Community of Christ Church Building Fund, or for the William Newton Health Care Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
