D. Pauline Miller, age 85, passed away August 30, 2012 at William Newton Hospital. Pauline was a lifetime resident of Winfield. She was a teacher for 47 years. She began her teaching career in a one room school house near Wilmot, Kansas. She retired as a 5th grade teacher from the Atlanta, Kansas grade school. Pauline began teaching when she was 18 years old. She had attended only 1 semester of college, but was allowed to start teaching because of the shortage of teachers caused by World War II. Pauline completed college and her master's degree in education from Emporia State University by going to summer school for many years. "Miss Miller" will be fondly remembered by her many students. She had the honor of teaching the grandchildren of some of her early students. She was a long time member of the Tisdale Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. In addition to music, Pauline loved painting and her home was filled with her artwork.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben Miller and Mabel Coulter Miller. She is survived by her sister, June Martin of Winfield, brother Sam Miller and his wife, Billie Joe of Winfield, her nieces and nephew, Emmalee Conover of Winfield, Victor Martin of Oklahoma City, Julianne Martin of Wichita, Karen Bannon of Arkansas City, and Sandra Becker of Hays, and her great nieces and nephews, Victoria and Alexandra Martin of Oklahoma City, and Christopher, Cole, and Cameron Conover of Winfield.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Tisdale Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
A Memorial has been established in Miss Miller's name for the Tisdale United Methodist Church Music Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
