Corwin L.
"Van" Van Meter
April 29, 1927 – November 16, 2020
Corwin L. "Van" Van Meter, 93, died November 16, 2020 peacefully in his sleep. He was a member of the Atlanta community for over 50 years.
Born on the kitchen floor of the family farm near Carmen, Oklahoma, on April 29, 1927, he was the son of Samuel and Helen (Martin) Van Meter. He was raised and received his education in Dacoma, Oklahoma, graduating from High School in 1945.
Van enlisted in the United States Navy at 17 during the conclusion of World War II. After returning home to Dacoma, he was united in marriage to Emily June Hiatt on May 11, 1947. Van farmed while operating a café and then a service station for several years. Opportunity called and he moved his family to California. He worked his way to managing an automotive department. The farm beckoned him home where he trained to be a farmer's Co-op manager, that is what brought him to Atlanta, Kansas. Van eventually retired from that position. Soon after his career, he became a USPS rural mail carrier and raised cattle. Van's storytelling and his memory were one of a kind. He was a member of Prairie View United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
Van is survived by his wife, Emily June of 73 wonderful years; two children, Mike Van Meter and wife, Jeanene of Winfield; Peggy Satterlee and husband, Gary of Winfield; his brothers, Bob Van Meter and wife, Ilene of Fairview, OK; Larry Van Meter and wife, Peggy of Dacoma, OK; his 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Van was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Carver and a brother, Estel "Bill" Van Meter.
Graveside services will be held Friday morning, November 20, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery east of Atlanta. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service Thursday evening, November 19, 2020 from 4 to 8.
