CORA MAY "CORKY" (PETERSON) DAVIS, 77, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday evening, November 16, 2008 at her home.
Born on December 9, 1930 in Lost Springs, Kansas, she was the daughter of George and Thyra (Bloomgren) Peterson. At the age of 3, she moved with her parents to rural White City, Kansas. As a child she loved to ride horses and play softball. She later was a 4-H member and earned many ribbons for her chickens and clothing. While in high school she played basketball and volleyball, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Corky graduated from Delavan High School in Morris County in 1948. She later graduated from Brown-Mackie School of Business in Salina, Kansas.
In June of 1950, Corky married her childhood sweetheart, Virgil Davis at a garden wedding on her parents family farm. The couple began housekeeping in Wichita, Kansas, and later moved to Haysville where they lived for 17 years. To this union were born four children, Mike, DeeDee, Terri and Sandi. Her children and husband were her greatest joys.
When her youngest was in kindergarten, Corky went to work to help supplement the family income. She 'set copy' for a newspaper and was a Kelley girl for many businesses prior to moving to Texas when Virgil was transferred. While in Texas, she entered the medical field and received her Registered Health Information Technician degree in the 70's. She worked in the medical field for 38 years. After the couple returned to Kansas, Corky was employed by the Wesley Medical Center as Health Record Analyst. In 1977, she requested to begin employment at William Newton Memorial Hospital as a Utilization Review Coordinator and shortly thereafter became the director of Medical Records where she worked until 1994. She was also an independent consultant for nursing homes and hospitals until the time of her death. Corky was a hard worker and enjoyed keeping busy.
Corky had been a 4-H leader, Brownie leader, Cub Scout leader and PTA officer for many years while her children were growing up. She loved sewing and making quilts for family and friends. While her daughters were in high school she made pep squad uniforms, drill team costumes and prom formals. When her daughters married, she made their matron of honors dresses and bridesmaids dresses. She was an active church member and loved each of the churches she had attended throughout her life. She was raised in the Swedish Lutheran Church and after her marriage was a member of the Methodist faith where she remained until her death. Corky was a member of the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild, the Wannabees Quilt Group, Helping Hands, the Grace Raymond Circle and had served on the board of directors for CCDS.
