Obituary

Clyde Leslie Watt, 97, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, August 5, 2024 at Winfield Senior Living.

Born February 27, 1927 in rural Winfield, he was the son of Ira and Rosa (King) Watt. He was raised and received his education in rural Winfield, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1945. While in high school he played football although he admitted he didn't know much about it.  After high school he joined the Merchant Marines, and went to Catalina Island for his training before being sent to Seattle on the MS Philae. Following his time in the service he returned to Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Nichols on September 29, 1946 in Rock, Kansas. Clyde worked as a janitor and bus driver at Sunnyside where Virginia taught. He later roughnecked in the winter. Clyde spent his life farming and raising livestock. He loved the land and the life it provided. His favorite time of the year was wheat harvest. Virginia preceded him in death on August 6, 2015.

He was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church. He sang with his brothers in the Watt Quartet while his sister-in-law Grace played the piano. Clyde loved watching car races on TV and going to 81 Speedway for relaxation.  He helped the community by serving on the Fairview Township Board for many years.

He is survived by his children, Joe Watt and wife, Debbie of Rock; Jennie Ireton and husband, Robert of Winfield; Jan Witte and husband, Steve of Winfield; his brother-in-law Walter Nichols and wife, Cheri; a special friend Judy Hefley; and his grandchildren, Ashley Bugbee and husband, Jay; Erin Watt; Sandra Hoefer and husband, Thomas; Matthew Ireton and wife, Lacey; Cody Witte and wife, Rebecca; Cade Witte and wife, Karly; Colton Witte and wife, Katie; and his great grandchildren, Gus Bugbee; Valerie Hoefer; Anakin and Ryker Ireton; Layton, Logan, and Lainey Witte; Avery and Tristan Witte; and Brady and Baker Witte.

In addition to his wife and parents, Clyde was preceded in death by three brothers, Estel, John, and Bill, and a sister Edna.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 12, 2024 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet visitors prior to the service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Clyde's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
