Cherry A. Groom, 66, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, March 10, 2020 at Fountain View Nursing and Rehab Center in Rose Hill, Kansas.
Born August 21, 1953 in Coffeyville, Kansas, she was the daughter of William R. and Alene Michelle (Pearson) Groom. She was raised and received her education in southeast Kansas and attended high school in Oxford. While in high school, Cherry was a member of the football team.
She married Bruce Hayes, and the couple moved to California for a short time before returning to Oxford to make their home. To this union, a son, Tim was born. The couple later divorced. She later married Gary Walker and the couple made their home in Winfield. To this union, two sons, Jeremy and Casey were born. The couple later divorced. Cherry worked most of her life as a CNA, first at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, and later in-home health for many area residents. She retired as a CNA in 2012. She enjoyed visiting with people, caring for others, and spending time with family and friends. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Her family includes her sons, Tim Hayes of Minnesota; Jeremy Walker and wife, Sharon of Winfield; Casey Walker and wife, Abbey of Derby; her sister Eileen Downen and husband, Rick of El Dorado; her grandchildren, Chance Hayes, Chase Hayes, Cody Hayes, Jaxson Walker, Arianna Walker, Cavion Walker, Caydin Walker, Casey Walker, Jr., Abreyan Walker, Chyler Walker, Camdin Walker; and two great grandchildren, Alice and Violet Hayes.
In addition to her parents, Cherry was preceded in death by a sister Debra Fuzzell and a brother Billy R. Groom.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Second Baptist Church in Winfield. Inurnment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery in Coffeyville. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Cherry's name for the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
