CHARLES WILLIAM "BILL" HINKLEY, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday evening, September 15, 2014 at Winfield Rest Haven.
Born September 22, 1922 in Graham, Texas, he was the son of William Robert and Clara Maude (Rubel) Hinkley. At age one, the family moved to Winfield and Bill attended Bryant and Irving Elementary schools. The family moved to Skelley Town, Texas in 1936. Bill played high school football and basketball for White Deer High School and graduated from this school. He was awarded a football scholarship to West Texas University. However, this was interrupted by the beginning of World War II.
Bill volunteered for the military service and joined the United States Air Force. He became a Crew Chief and Flight Engineer on B-24 planes. During this time while stationed in California, Charles returned temporarily to Winfield and married Dorothy M. (Graham) Megli on July 7, 1945. He returned to California and was honorably discharged from the Air Force on December 7, 1945.
Bill returned to Winfield and began working as an automotive mechanic. Later, he became owner and operator of Hinkley Auto Service and was the owner for 28 years before retiring in 1984. Mrs. Hinkley preceded him in death on June 11, 1996.
Bill was an active member of the American Legion, serving as commander for one year. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and other civic organizations. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and his stepson, Larry Megli.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 9 A.M. Saturday morning. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at Highland Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in Bill's name for the American Legion Post #10 and the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
