CHARLES WALTER VERBECK, 80, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at William Newton Hospital.
Born on April 21, 1933 in Dexter, Kansas, he was the son of James and Laura Hazel (Barker) Verbeck. He was raised and received his education in Burden, Kansas.
On March 24, 1953, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country as a Seaman. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1957.
He was united in marriage on April 6, 1957 to Carolyn Beeman in Winfield, Kansas. The couple made their home in Winfield. In 1957, Charles went to work at the Winfield Daily Courier in the composition department. He retired in 2003. Charles began employment at Walmart in 2008 as a greeter and was employed there at the time of his death.
Charles was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield. He had volunteered at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival for 35 years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his dog Precious.

His grandchildren: Winter Westfield of South Carolina; Buck Verbeck and wife Leigh Ann of Arkansas City, KS; and Hannah Langley of Winfield, KS; and
His great-grandchildren: Talon & Tucker Verbeck of Arkansas City, KS.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Verbeck.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, west of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday, June 10, 2013.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Verbeck's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
