Obituary

CECIL HAROLD MORRELL, 92, of 1320 Ann, Winfield, Kansas passed away Monday afternoon, October 12, 2009 at Rest Haven in Winfield, Kansas.

Services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5 to 9. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30 that evening.

Cecil was born on February 27, 1917, east of Winfield to Harvey and Leona (Ruggles) Morrell. He received his education in Winfield and the Winfield area, graduating from Winfield High School in 1935.

During his teen years, he was employed at the White Lily restaurant. During World War II, Cecil serviced and modified Link Trainers at Strother Field in support of the war effort.

Cecil was united in marriage to Marjorie Eleanor Cadwell on October 8, 1939, at the First Baptist Parsonage in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield where they worked together at the family owned business, the White Lily Café from 1940. They moved from the restaurant business to open C&E (Cecil and Eli) Auto in 1945, and later, in 1949, they opened West Ninth Sinclair Service Repair. In 1957, Marjorie and Cecil opened Main Street Auto Service which they operated until retiring in 1973. Retirement was short-lived as two years later (1975) they purchased and managed the Adeline and Delano Apartments and other rental properties in Winfield. Cecil was a people person and enjoyed the opportunities to interact with employees and the public that came with being a small business owner.

The family attended Grace United Methodist Church. Cecil's hobbies included his family, gardening, and traveling.

Cecil and Marjorie were married 62 years. Marjorie preceded Cecil in death on April 13, 2002.

For the past ten years, Cecil has lived in an apartment at Winfield Rest Haven where many of the residents have enjoyed his sense of humor, hugs, and friendly smiles. He will be missed by his immediate family and his extended family whose lives he has touched in meaningful ways over the years.

His family includes:
His sons: Noble Morrell, Sr. and wife, Janet of Topeka, KS; and Dale Morrell and wife, Karen of Maize, KS;
His grandchildren: Noble Morrell, Jr., Matthew Morrell, Daylene Morrell, and Bryan Morrell; and
His great-grandchildren: Blake Morrell, Alyssa Morrell, Sarah Morrell, and step-great-grandson, Joshua Salazar.
Cecil is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

In addition to his wife, Marjorie, Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Leona (Ruggles) Morrell, and his siblings, Lottie Hotchkiss, Orville Morrell and Bernice Thompson.

Memorials have been established in Cecil's name for Winfield Rest Haven and for the Winfield Community Food Pantry at Grace United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
