Obituary

Cecil N. Askins, 83, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, June 28, 2010 at his home.

Born September 1, 1926 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of George Walter and Lula Mae (Asbury) Askins. He was raised and received his education in Winfield where he attended Winfield High School. After school he went to work with his brother-in-law Pete Davis, at Peerless Bakery.

He was united in marriage on October 15, 1944 to Dorthey May Davis in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield where Cecil worked for the City of Winfield in the power plant for over 40 years, until retiring in 1988. After retiring Cecil loved baling and hauling hay.

The family enjoyed vacationing at Buffalo River National Park in Arkansas. There Cecil would lead family hikes and take the children and grandchildren canoeing. He enjoyed going to Blue Grass every year and camping at the Fair Grounds with his wife Dorthey. He was always known for and loved taking the scenic route wherever they would go. He especially loved spending time with family and telling them stories.

His family includes:
His sons: Micheal Askins and wife, Linda of McPherson; Timothy Askins of Winfield;
His daughters: Diana Rathbun and husband, Doug of Winfield; Cheryl Hass and husband, Glen of Nowata, OK; Leisa Potts and husband, Kevin of Winfield; Anna McClung and husband, Kevin of Winfield; and
His 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Cecil was preceded in death by a granddaughter Barbara Robertson, a grandson, Timothy Ty Askins, a great-grandson Corbin Adair Rathbun, and a daughter-in-law Mary Askins.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M., Tuesday July 6, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Cecil's name for Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
