Obituary

Carolyn A. Houghtaling, 67, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Carolyn was born September 19, 1951 in Beloit, Kansas to Oren and Esther (Rohrs) Houghtaling. She grew up in Alton, Kansas, graduating from Alton High School in 1969. From there, she went on to nursing school at Barton County Community College in Great Bend graduating in 1971. Her first nursing job was in Ulysses, Kansas. She and her mom moved to Winfield in the 1970's, and she went to work for William Newton Hospital as a Registered Nurse for 25 years. Most of that time was spent working in the emergency room, a job that she loved. After leaving William Newton Hospital, Carolyn worked at Good Samaritan, South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, and retired from Presbyterian Manor in 2009.

Carolyn never married or had biological children of her own, but raised her two nieces, Kristina and Kathleen Morris as her own their entire lives. She was grandma to their children, Jasmine, Isabella, Abigail, and Matthew. They were the light of her life.

Carolyn also loved to travel. She traveled all over the world as a young adult and instilled the love of scenic travels into her family by traveling all over Kansas to historical and interesting sites. After he retirement, Carolyn spent her time with her family, traveling, helping with schooling, passing on knowledge and funny stories, and just making memories.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her father on December 2, 1963 and her mother on January 26, 1994.

Her family includes her sister Jolene Rhea and husband, Paul of Osborne; her nieces/daughters, Kristina Morris and fiancé, Steve Westfall of Winfield; Kathleen Morris and fiancé, Robert Lambert of Arkansas City; her grandchildren, Jasmine Morris, Isabella Westfall, Abigail Morris-Estes, Matthew Morris-Estes; as well as cousin Lorene Oppy and husband, Mike of Manhattan.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Church of Christ in Winfield. Interment will be held at the Sumner Cemetery in Alton, Kansas on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Friday, July 19, 2019 from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

A memorial has been established in Carolyn's name for the Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
