Carl Edward Seeliger, 91, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon, February 11, 2022, surrounded by family at his home.
Born July 11, 1930, in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Edward and Lola (Weathered) Seeliger. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1948. He then joined the United States Navy, honorably serving his country.
When Carl returned from the Navy, he began his lifelong calling as a farmer in the Tisdale community. In the early years, he raised cattle and farmed wheat and other traditional crops with teams of horses. He received the award of Outstanding Young Farmer in 1965. In 1985, he became the first farmer to grow cotton in Cowley County. After years of hauling his cotton to Yukon, Oklahoma for ginning, Carl founded the Southern Kansas Cotton Growers' Gin west of Winfield.
In the winter months, Carl spent over 23 years as a charter bus driver in Winfield. He often commented that his favorite trip was the St. John's College Choir Tour. In the mid 1980's, he gave up driving bus to start spreading lime throughout southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
He was united in marriage to Arlene Love on February 18, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. Carl's love for horses and mules took the couple on many adventures. They enjoyed taking their wagon and team on trail rides, wagon trails, and participating in many parades. They particularly enjoyed the Lawrence Christmas Parade, and the Fair Grove Missouri Wagon Train.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. He was also a member of Southern Kansas Cotton Growers, the Winfield Saddle Club, and served on the Tisdale Township Board for over 20 years.
His family includes his wife Arlene Seeliger of Burden; his sons, Mark Seeliger and wife, Katherine of Winfield; Mike Seeliger and wife, Carolyn of Winfield; his daughter Carlene Benscoter and husband, Randy of Nampa, ID; his stepchildren, Tom Faber and wife, Lorrie of Louisiana; Peggy Stalnaker and husband, David of Winfield; Jeni Hope and husband, Steve of Napa, CA; Bonita Watkins and husband, Scott of Newkirk, OK; his grandchildren, Jon Seeliger; Brett Seeliger; Ruth Kaufman; Joel Benscoter; Brian Seeliger; and his 12 step grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents Carl was preceded in death by a stepson Eddie Leftwich, and his sister Margaret Haddock.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. A visitation is scheduled Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A memorial has been established in Carl's name for the Trinity Lutheran Church Stained Glass Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
