Carl Gregor Homme, 88 of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield.
Born September 8, 1926 in Coal Springs, South Dakota, he was the son of Ole G. and Emma Khristine (Ingeborg) Homme. He was raised and received his education in Coal Springs. While in South Dakota, Carl worked as a sheep herder.
On August 22, 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Gun Smith during the Korean War. During his service, he received many awards including the Combat Infantry Badge, a Unit Citation, Purple Heart Medal, a UN Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. Following his honorable discharge on August 15, 1956, Carl returned to South Dakota and began working as a ranch hand, and also worked on a seismograph crew and was an oil crew worker.
When Carl moved to Arkansas City, Kansas, he worked at the Rodeo Meat Packing Plant. He then became self-employed as a sheep shearer, which he continued to do for 40 years until his retirement in 2010. While living in Arkansas City, Carl met his wife, Vivian Conroy. The couple made their home in Winfield. Mrs. Homme preceded him in death in 1994.
Carl was a member of the Wings as Eagles Church in Winfield and the Winfield Masonic Lodge. As a young man, he enjoyed participating in rodeos in the bareback and bull riding events. He was an avid gardener for several decades.

His 11 grandchildren and numerous Great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Carl was preceded in death by his daughters, Jeannette Arnett, and Phyllis Salas, his great-grandson, Samuel J. Arnett and his sisters, Enga Rose, Anna Amdahl, and Olga Wells, and his brothers, Henry and Gunder Homme.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Inurnment will take place at 2:00 that afternoon at White Chapel Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.
A memorial has been established in Carl's name for the Wings as Eagles Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
