Obituary

CARL ELBERT HAWLEY, 74, of Cambridge, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 24, 2011 at his home.

Born March 4, 1937 in Cambridge, he was the son of Pearl and Gladys (Logsdon) Hawley. He was raised and received his education in Cambridge, graduating high school in 1955. He attended and graduated Cowley County Community College in 1957.

Carl was united in marriage to Joan Sutton on June 7, 1958 at the Grenola Christian Church. The couple made their home in Cambridge.

Mr. Hawley worked on the family farm. In 1959, he went to work for Charlie Archambeau at Charlie's Appliance in Winfield. He then went back to farming. He owned the laundromat in Burden from 1981 to 1985. He was a self employed serviceman and owned and operated Carl's Ice Company until 2008. Carl worked for the City of Cambridge as the water and sewer superintendent until his death. He also bought homes to remodel and use as rental property.

He attended the Cambridge Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, farming and woodworking. He loved working on the farm, playing cards with his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His daughter: Jackie Liebau and husband, Chuck of Cambridge;
His brothers: Ellis Hawley of Iowa City, IA; and Raymond Hawley and wife, Phyllis of Coffeyville, KS;
His sister: Dorothy Keplinger and husband, Dean of Grenola;
His two grandchildren: Amie Ferguson and husband, Isaac; Andrew Liebau and wife, Betsy;
His four great grandchildren: Parker and Violet Ferguson; and Lyla and Lucas Liebau; and
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Carla Thompson and husband Joel in 1975, his brother-in-law, Billy E. Morgan and his sister-in-law, Sophia Hawley.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at the Cambridge Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Kay Hull officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials have been established in Carl's name for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and for Cambridge Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
