Byron Jones, 82, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, February 21, 2019 at Cumbernauld Village.

Born February 3, 1937 in Ada, Oklahoma, he was the son of D.B. and Coma (Lazenby) Jones. His family moved to Portland, Oregon when Byron was five years old. They then came to Winfield, Kansas, where he graduated from Winfield High School. Byron joined the United States Army and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge. He attended Oklahoma State University where he played football and graduated with his Bachelor Degree. He then attended Emporia State University and received his Master's Degree in Biology.

Byron was united in marriage to Carolyn Fisher on August 9, 1964 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield where Byron worked as a Biology Teacher and coach. He coached basketball in Udall, winning Regionals and taking 2nd at State. He coached football at Winfield High School and at Southwestern College. He was also a track coach. Byron also worked as a farmer and car salesman.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and was an active member of the Winfield Masonic Lodge serving as Grand Master twice. Byron was a member of the American Legion and was a faithful member of the Legion Honor Guard. He loved coaching and was an avid OSU fan.

His family includes his wife Carolyn of Winfield; his daughters Ardeth Jones of Oklahoma City, OK; Krissy Smith and husband, Charles of Denton, TX; and his granddaughter Samantha Smith.

In addition to his parents, Byron was preceded in death by his aunt, Alma Lazenby.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Interment and Military and Masonic Committal Honors will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City. A celebration of life dinner will be held at the American Legion beginning at 6:00 P.M. All family and friends are invited to come share memories. Please RSVP for the dinner by March 5th to the funeral home. Friends may sign a register book at Miles Funeral Service on Friday, March 8, 2019 from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

A memorial has been established in Byron's name for Cumbernauld Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
