Obituary

CHARLES WILLIAM (BILL) MEDLEY, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away March 20, 2015 at his home.

Bill was born January 16, 1928 in Caldwell, Kansas, to Charles and Delia (Oathout) Medley. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1945. He received his BA degree from Southwestern College in 1949 and his Masters degree from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia in 1957. He received additional education from University of KS, WY, CO, OR, MS, DE, Pittsburgh and WSU.

Bill was united in marriage to Maxine Hudspeth in Caldwell on August 14, 1949. They made their home in Winfield. Bill was a teacher at Winfield High School from 1949-1952, Asst. Principal from 1954-1956. He served in the US Army-Intelligence from 1952-1954. Bill was Principal at Lawrence, KS from 1965-1973, Concord Deleware High School 1973-1981 and Superintendent of USD 465 from 1981-1994 retiring in 1995. Bill was Associate Professor at Southwestern College from 1998-2000.

During his lifetime Bill received many honors and awards: Winfield Jaycees-John Hay Fellow-Danworth Foundation-United School Administrators of KS-Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame-Winfield Chamber of Commerce and Southwestern College.

He served in many elected and appointed positions: KS State Teachers Association-KS Association of Secondary Schools and Principals-Ark Valley League-Sunflower League-DE Secondary Schools Athletic Association-National Association of Secondary School Principals-Lawrence Chamber of Commerce-Winfield Library Board-USD 465 Foundation-Winfield Arts and Humanities-Southwestern College Athletic Hall of Fame Committee-Kids Voting-Lions Club-Methodist Churches-National Advisory Council, University of KS School of Education and Easter Seal Capper Foundation.

He is survived by his wife: Maxine;
His daughter Jennifer Ely and husband Wayne of West Chester, PA;
His son: Forrest Medley and wife Beth of West Friendship, MD;
His grandchildren: Rebecca Ely, Amanda Boening and husband James, Mackenzie and Alex Medley;
His great-granddaughter: Charlotte Boening;
His sister: Dorothy Fisher and husband Jim of Moore, OK; and
Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents,

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, March 26, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Private family inurnment will take place at Kansas Veterans Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Bill's name for Winfield USD 465 Foundation, Southwestern College and Easter Seal Capper Foundation.
