Beulah Lee (Dungey) Shafer, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away December 2, 2017 at Winfield Rest Haven.
She was born July 8, 1926 in Madison, Kansas, the daughter of Roy and Beulah Susan Abashaba (Carttar) Greenland. Her mother died when she was two years old and Beulah was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Louis A. and Gertrude L. (Carttar) Dungey.
Beulah lived her entire life in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944. She married John L. Shafer in Winfield, Kansas on December 31, 1948. He preceded her in death on April 7, 2000.
Following high school graduation she was employed at Strother Field as a bookkeeper. She retired from William Newton Hospital in 1995 as a PBX Operator. Beulah and her husband survived a near-fatal car accident and she was his primary caregiver for over 20 years. Her greatest love was her family, especially her children and grandchildren.
Beulah was a 90-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield; Eastern Star; American Legion Auxiliary serving as State Chaplain and State President; 8 & 40; Girls State Advisor; and had volunteered at the Winfield Veterans Home receiving recognition as Top Volunteer. She also had written and published articles in the Rural Letter Carriers Association publications about Alzheimer's Disease.
She is survived by:

Son-in-law: Charles Carson of Emporia;
Grandchildren: Samantha Schenk of Emporia; Joel Wells (Sarah) of Topeka; Ashley Muninger (Barry) of Topeka; Zachary Shafer of Emporia; Meghan McGinnis (Michael) of Hutchinson; Grant Carson (Kali) of Olathe;
Great grandchildren: Chloe and Konner Schenk; Bennett and Hadley Wells; Owen Shafer; Nolan Muninger; Cameron McGinnis; Grace Carson; and one expected May 2018;
Sister-in-law: Jackie Shafer of Arkansas City; and
Several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Charles Dungey, sister, Mary Louise Pfenning, and twin great granddaughters, Lauren and Zoey Muninger.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Beulah's name for Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
