Obituary

BERTHA WILLIAMS-MADDOX, 94, of Winfield, passed away Tuesday morning, June 23, 2009 at Cumbernauld Village.

Born July 19, 1914 at the family's Maple City farmstead, she was the daughter of Jonah P. and Esther (Rhodes) Vaden. She was raised and educated in Eucha and Grainola, Oklahoma.

Bertha was united in marriage to Robert R. Williams in July of 1933. The couple made their home on the family farm northeast of Dexter, where they raised their four girls. Mr. Williams preceded her in death on May 17, 1990. She was united in marriage to Orrie Maddox on July 24, 1992 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. Orrie preceded her in death on October 5, 2002.

Bertha was a farmer's wife and a loving mother. She was a seamstress and an excellent pie-maker. She enjoyed embroidery, quilting, and loved gardening. She was a member of the rug hooking club and the Dexter Order of the Eastern Star.

Her family includes:
Her daughters: Shirley Curtis of Phoenix, AZ; Anita Green and husband, Jim of Arkansas City; Roberta Boomershine and husband, Darrel of Winfield; and Jeanie Purcell and husband, Tony of McKinney, TX;
Her grandchildren: Sonya Green-Estep, Michelle Wilson, Monica Frame, Brian Curtis, Dawn Warner, and Terry Boomershine;
Her great-grandchildren: Stephanie DeWald, Justin and Jenna Curtis, Ashley and Lindsay Wilson, Drake and Eve Frame, Cannyon Ramos, and Hunter Boomershine;
Her great-great-grandchild: Kalie Curtis;
Numerous nieces and nephews;
Her adopted family members from Cumbernauld Village whom she cared and loved; and
Her dear friends: Velma "Ted" Carter, Sue Dinneen and Denise Hamilton.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Bertha was preceded in death by her siblings, Bessie Tousley-Powers, Mae Robinson, William Vaden, Victoria O'Connor, Clarence Glenn and her nephew, Jack Williams.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Miles Funeral Service at 3:00 P.M. Interment will precede the memorial service at 2:00 at the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Friday evening from 6 to 9. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Mrs. Maddox' name for Hospice Care of Kansas for all of their loving care and support. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
