Bertha G. Reeves, 90, of Grenola, Kansas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family singing Victory in Jesus, Thursday morning, June 1, 2023, at Andover Court.
Born September 15, 1932, in Wauneta, Kansas, she was the daughter of David "Jim" Emerson and Meda Mae (Wells) Wolfe. She was raised in the Round Mound area and moved to Grenola during her freshman year. She graduated from Grenola High School in 1950. She then attended Wichita Business College.
She was united in marriage to Carl Edwin Reeves on March 15, 1951 in Howard. The couple made their first home in Caldwell before moving to rural Grenola. Bertha was a devoted farmer's wife and mother, taking food to the fields and neighbors. She worked for the Grenola and Moline School Districts before starting her career as a cook at Central of Burden Schools. She remained a cook at Central for many years until retiring in 1998. After retiring, Bertha continued catering for the school system as well as for family and community activities. Carl preceded her in death on December 16, 1998.
Bertha was a very devoted and active member of the Grenola Christian Church for many years. In addition to serving as Sunday School Teacher she cooked many meals for weddings, funerals, and other church activities. She was also active in the women's Bible study, Vacation Bible School, and the church's quilting club. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, canning, cooking, spending time with grandchildren, and playing the Mandolin. In her later years, she enjoyed Bingo, playing cards, Wii bowling, and doing her laundry. Bertha was a caring individual, wanting others to feel happy, needed, and loved.
Her family includes her children Fred Emerson Reeves and wife, Susan of Neodesha; E. Karleen Reeves Smith and husband, Milo of Towanda; Rhonda Joy Reeves Connelly-Armstrong and husband, Rob of Arkansas City; her son-in-law Perry Fulsom of Grenola; her brothers, David Wolfe of Grenola; Jess Wolfe and wife, Peggy of Grenola; her sister Freda Wolfe Daehnke of Winfield; her grandchildren, Tawnya Smith Sheppard, Tyra (Richard) Miles, Scott (Deanna) Reeves, Heather Reeves, Robert (Krystal) Reeves, Micah (Kyle) Crotts, Alex (Kayla) Fulsom, Luke (Anita) Connelly, Weston (Cindy) Connelly, Jacob (Selena) Connelly; her great grandchildren, Ciara, Toby, Kaitlyn, Maycee, Ashten, Skout, Kreed, Kruz, Emberly, Brinley, Presley, Jaxon, Jaylee, Peri, Carly, Reese, Halle, Lucas, Leah, Colby, Katryna, Caden, Davin, Selah, Ronan, Ezekiel; a great-great granddaughter T'Ana; and numerous nieces nephews cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bertha was preceded in death by a daughter Carla Rae Fulsom, sisters, Bessie June Wolfe, Marilyn Lois Bell, Lela Mae Bright, a brother Billy Herman Wolfe, a granddaughter Rachel Fulsom, a grandson Derrick Connelly, and a great granddaughter Hannah Connelly.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the Grenola Christian Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:15 that morning.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Bertha's name to Grenola Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
